David Beckham and Michael Owen once again illustrated
their almost telepathic link-up with a marvelous display
in England's 3-2 victory over Colombia at Giants Stadium.
After the Real Madrid duo winged in to the Big Apple
following their club's final game of the La Liga season
over the weekend, the two were immediately in sync for
England. Joe Cole and a quick-thinking Peter Crouch
set up Owen's first two strikes but it was the unique
synchronicity between Owen and Beckham that displayed
itself beautifully in the 55th minute when Owen knew
exactly where to be to volley home Beckham's cross to
complete his first hat trick for England since that
memorable 5-1 win over Germany in 2001. David Beckham
turned on the charm offensive beforehand, excitedly
telling reporters of his love for America and leaving
a tantalizing hint that his career may take him to MLS
one day. The match was actually Beckham's first ever
in the States, having been shipped out just ahead of
Manchester United's tour in 2003 while Real Madrid's
own sojourn to America was called off in 2004 due to
poor league form. Michael Owen's future at Real Madrid
remains cloudy, but Beckham's looks like nothing but
clear skies. With Luis Figo almost certain to be moving
on from the Bernabeu this summer, the coveted right-side
midfield slot for Real will be Beckham's entirely. No
more awkward central midfield duty for the England skipper.
Whether Owen will still be there to turn in his inch-perfect
crosses; however, remains to be seen.
