Argentina booked their ticket to Germany 2006 in fine
style. An emphatic 3-1 victory over Brazil in front
of a rabid Buenos Aires crowd showed their five-time
World Cup-winning neighbors who really should be the
favorite to win it all next summer. A rampant first
half display produced a brace from Hernan Crespo, still
stuck between AC Milan and Chelsea, and a spectacular
individual strike from the criminally underrated Juan
Roman Riquelme that saw off the Brazilians before they
could even get going. Roberto Carlos salvaged some samba
pride with a freekick goal in the second half but it
was far too little, too late. The win exorcised some
recent demons Argentina held in regards to Brazil; a
last-second goal from Adriano cost Argentina the Copa
America last summer while an ill-tempered match in Belo
Horizonte last June saw Brazil win 3-1 with Ronaldo,
absent from the match Wednesday, scoring a hat trick
of penalties. When Argentina play such as this, nobody
in the world can touch them. .
