The U.S. have successfully navigated through their
first two matches at the FIFA World Youth Championships
without conceding a goal, thanks to the unflappable
Quentin Westberg. A 0-0 draw with Germany that the U.S.
probably should have won followed an inspiring, unexpected
1-0 victory over Argentina on the weekend. However their
scoring touch seems to have deserted two of their brightest
talents; Freddy Adu missed a penalty late in the Argentina
match that would have iced it and eliminated the nervy
ending, while Eddie Gaven had a couple of silver-plated
opportunities in the Germany match but failed to convert
them into goals. Next up for Sigi Schmid’s likeable
bunch are group minnows Egypt, where the U.S. should
work out their finishing problems before moving on to
the knockout rounds.
