In a match that had a lot going for it at the start,
Brazil scored a 1-0 victory over Switzerland in an ultimately
disappointing World Youth Championships game. The Swiss,
boasting two bright up-and-coming Premiership talents
in Arsenal’s Philippe Senderos and Tottenham’s
Reto Ziegler, had won their first match over South Korea
and had been tipped by many as potential dark horses
for the tournament. And Brazil are always worth watching,
no matter the age level. But when the Brazilians grabbed
an early lead off a 14th minute Gladstone header, the
air went out of the match and a tedious affair ensued.
Switzerland’s Johan Vonlanthen enlivened things
somewhat with sprightly running and a magnificent bicycle
kick in the dying moments that was stopped by Brazilian
keeper Renan.
