Chelsea Football Club today helped launch Kick for CLIC
Sargent – the football initiative organised by
the club’s official charity partner CLIC Sargent.
Manager José Mourinho, captain John Terry and
goalkeeper Petr Cech shared their football skills with
more than 20 children at Chelsea’s Cobham training
ground to kick off the initiative, which is in partnership
with American Express.
All the children are involved with Chelsea's Football
in the Community scheme and came from schools in the
Borough of Elmbridge where Cobham is based.
Mourinho said: “It is great that the club supports
CLIC Sargent and we should do all we can to help the
kids especially when it comes to encouraging them and
playing football. For me the kids are everything, whether
you are a father or not, and if they are ill we have
to protect them and their families by helping them.
"As I continue working with American Express it’s
great that they also get involved supporting junior
football and raising money for a fantastic charity at
the same time."
John Terry added: “As captain of Chelsea Football
Club, I am right behind Kick for CLIC Sargent. I’d
encourage children across the UK to take part in Kick
for CLIC Sargent and score some goals to help children
with cancer. You never know - If you put in enough practice
you could be the next Chelsea or England goalscorer!”
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading children’s
cancer charity. Kick for CLIC Sargent is a fun programme
of fundraising events - such as sponsored challenges,
skills days and penalty shoot-outs. The target is to
involve a minimum of 100,000 children from schools,
youth groups and football clubs throughout May and June.
When the campaign was launched last year, again with
the aid of Chelsea, it was a huge success.
More than 89,000 children have already signed up this
year and 790 schools, 200 more than last year.
Chelsea is halfway through its two-year partnership
with CLIC Sargent. It is the first official charity
partnership the club has had and the target for fundraising
has already been exceeded. Chelsea's main aim is to
raise the national profile of the charity as well as
act as a catalyst for direct or indirect fundraising
via other companies, such as American Express.
Fundraising events for CLIC Sargent have so far included
an auction at the Legends Centenary dinner last December
and the auctioning of Jose’s famous Armani overcoat!
Of the money raised by Kick for CLIC Sargent, 75% will
be used to provide ongoing care and support for the
thousands of children and young people, and their families,
affected by childhood cancer and leukemia every year
in the UK. Schools, clubs and associations taking part
will be able to keep the remaining 25% of the money
they raise to use on their own local initiatives.
